Extinction Rebellion DC Volunteer Day - Franciscan Monastery Garden Guild

  • Franciscan Monastery Garden Guild (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

The XRDC Regenerative Culture Working Group is inviting you out to the Franciscan Monastery Garden Guild for a volunteer day on Saturday, April 19 starting at 10 am. Usually people stay until 2pm, so bring a lunch!

The Garden Guild is a non-profit independent from the monastery that grows thousands of pounds of produce a year for donation to local food banks and shelters, which is becoming more and more important as the federal government strips food assistance funding.

We will be weeding, mulching, and getting dirty with other general garden maintenance, so please wear appropriate clothing. You will get a chance to tour our gardens and the 100+ year-old greenhouse. This is a chance to learn some basic gardening techniques, and connect to some super cool urban gardeners!

Note on accessibility: The entrances to the garden and greenhouse are paved, but the spaces between garden beds are not paved. There is a large bump to get into the garden gate that may be difficult for wheelchair users. We will be standing, squatting, bending, lifting, and using sharp gardening tools. There are shaded picnic tables at which to sit. We will assign gardening tasks based on physical needs as requested.

Washington Gas rate hike hearings & rally

The Public Service Commission doesn’t provide many opportunities for the public to get involved — but this month they are! The latest way to oppose Washington Gas (WGL)’s bad behavior is to show up at upcoming PSC hearings about WGL’s rate case (i.e., their request to increase everyone’s gas bills).

There are 2 more hearings this month:

  • April 21st, rally 4:30, hearing 5:00, Petworth Library, 4200 Kansas Ave NW

  • April 29th, rally 5:00, hearing 6:00, PSC office, 1325 G St NW

There are several ways to be involved:

  1. You can speak during the hearing and be heard by PSC Commissioners, and/or

  2. You can visually support our message, which could include attending the hearing in a Stop Project Pipes t-shirt, or posing as a construction worker outside to warn passersby that rate hikes are currently under construction!

If you are interested in participating in any way / on any day, please email extinctionrebelliondc@protonmail.com

If you know you want to speak at a hearing, please also sign up via this form from our friends at CCAN (they’ll provide you with talking points, among other support): https://act.ccanactionfund.org/page/80783/data/1

  • 1325 G Street Northwest Washington, DC, 20005 United States (map)

Our campaign to fight dirty methane gas in DC is at a critical junction. After a big win last summer, the DC Public Service Commission (PSC) is once again considering Washington Gas’ latest proposal to saddle residents with the cost of unnecessarily replacing its gas pipelines. We’re not fooled by Washington Gas’ scheming: this is a bold cash grab that will line the gas company’s pockets while residents pay the price.

The PSC will decide on this plan any day now, so we’re keeping the pressure on to let them know that the District is watching. We will rally in front of the PSC’s office to collect and deliver written messages to demand that the PSC reject Washington Gas's expensive and dangerous District UNsafe plan. This plan would lock us into paying $12 billion for decades of fracked methane gas pipelines, all to generate higher profits for Washington Gas. The people say NO to Washington Gas and its "accelerated pipeline replacement" profit schemes.

To ensure the message gets through, we plan to gather every Wednesday morning at 8:15am.

Together with other groups, we won a long fight to get the PSC to reject Washington Gas' “Project Pipes” phase 3 plan. Now Washington Gas has re-branded it, and we'll defeat it again!

Extended contemplative time in nature calms the mind, promotes well-being, and cultivates a profound sense of belonging. During this truly immersive experience with a trained expert guide, you will be invited to slow down, to be curious, and to touch, smell, hear, and see nature more fully. We will also take time to honor the trees of Rock Creek Park with a special meditation.

The walk will not be strenuous but requires the ability to walk a mile or so on uneven surfaces.

XRDC at the People's March

Extinction Rebellion DC (XRDC) will join this year's People's March on Saturday, January 18th 2025 in Washington, D.C. The People's March is organized by a coalition of groups who march for different reasons, but for the same cause: to defend our rights and our future. The organizers expect around 50,000 people to join the march - from all over the country. You can find further information at www.peoplesmarch.com.

Join XRDC at the march to show the incoming administration that the time is now to act on climate change and ecological breakdown. With a looming up-hill battle for activists over the coming four years, we will send a clear message: We will not stop fighting for a better future!

LINK TO REGISTER: https://actionnetwork.org/events/xrdc-at-the-peoples-march

The People's March focuses on many issues, but especially women's rights. Women's rights and climate justice are deeply interconnected issues. By marching together, we emphasize that the fight for climate justice must also be a fight for gender equity and empowerment.

Sign up today to join other rebels for a peaceful, powerful and artistic participation in the march!

LINK TO REGISTER: https://actionnetwork.org/events/xrdc-at-the-peoples-march

Logistics: The march will begin at 10am at the Washington Monument on the Mall but the XRDC contingent will gather nearby at 9:15am to get ready for the march. The exact meet-up location will be communicated to the registered participants beforehand.

Outfits: We are aiming for a strong unifying visual appearance. If possible, therefore please wear all black. Ideal would be a black hoodie. If you are interested, we will meet for an art build (see below) to make costumes - but this is not mandatory. FYI, we will have face paint at the event.

Art build (11 January 2025 at 2pm): We will meet for an art build to make banners, costumes, and other things on Saturday, January 11th at 2pm. Please tell us if you would like to join and we will let you know where we will meet.

Defend Rock Creek Emergency Rallies!

  • 6300 16th Street Northwest Washington, DC, 20011 United States (map)

Join us to protest the National Park Service as they have begun to cut down 1,000+ trees in Rock Creek Park to expand the Golf Course and build a driving range.

This project is an abomination and represents a huge loss for our community, fueling:

  • Climate change

  • Ecosystem destruction

  • Environmental injustice

  • Gentrification

We must work together to stop the devastation of these sacred trees, protect endangered species in Rock Creek, and unite against profit-driven desecration of indigenous lands. Attend these rallies to tour the cutting sites, resist the project, and build organizational power together. There we will uplift our demand for a Citizen’s Assembly and a more thorough study of environmental impact!

Rock Creek Park is for the community, the animals, and the earth, but this project would primarily serve just the wealthiest residents of DC while destroying local ecosystems.

This local struggle also echoes indigenous struggles globally. Land destruction is a tool of colonizers everywhere from Palestine to the Congo to Ecuador to DC. We have a duty to defend the land from all forces of economic greed and profit-driven violence.

Please spread the word. Take action with us this week. Defend the land, defend our future.

Demand Debt Cancellation from IMF

  • 1700 K Street Northwest Washington, DC, 20006 United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Come demand debt cancellation for the Global South at the IMF and World Bank meetings.

Climate justice demands debt cancellation! Take action to tell the IMF that the debt of Global South nations is connected to a warming climate...and how much debt cancellation matters!

Those of us in the US have a particular responsibility to pressure our government, since the US Treasury Secretary has veto power within the IMF governing body. And we can encourage the Global South delegates who are pushing for debt cancellation.

We will gather at 1700 K St NW at 7:30am and then depart by 8am to march.

Let's Speak for the Trees - March to Save Rock Creek

Let's Speak for the Trees - March to Save Rock Creek

  • Picnic Grove #6, Rock Creek Park Washington DC USA (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

The Rock Creek Park we all love is in danger under the hands of the National Park Service, as they move forward with their plan to cut down 1000+ trees to expand a golf course. But we know that the people of DC will not let that happen.

Join us as we Speak for the trees, loud enough so NPS is forced to listen. We will gather and celebrate all the gifts Rock Creek Park gives to us. We will celebrate their beautiful canopy, their life-giving presence, their strength and their long and loving endurance. We will fight this deforestation plan with love as a way to show not only our gratitude, but our reciprocity.

The "Let's Speak for the Trees" march will be on Sunday, October 13th starting at 2pm. This will be a peaceful, joyous and loving demonstration. More details to come.
