Defend Rock Creek Emergency Rallies!

  • 6300 16th Street Northwest Washington, DC, 20011 United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Join us to protest the National Park Service as they have begun to cut down 1,000+ trees in Rock Creek Park to expand the Golf Course and build a driving range.

This project is an abomination and represents a huge loss for our community, fueling:

  • Climate change

  • Ecosystem destruction

  • Environmental injustice

  • Gentrification

We must work together to stop the devastation of these sacred trees, protect endangered species in Rock Creek, and unite against profit-driven desecration of indigenous lands. Attend these rallies to tour the cutting sites, resist the project, and build organizational power together. There we will uplift our demand for a Citizen’s Assembly and a more thorough study of environmental impact!

Rock Creek Park is for the community, the animals, and the earth, but this project would primarily serve just the wealthiest residents of DC while destroying local ecosystems.

This local struggle also echoes indigenous struggles globally. Land destruction is a tool of colonizers everywhere from Palestine to the Congo to Ecuador to DC. We have a duty to defend the land from all forces of economic greed and profit-driven violence.

Please spread the word. Take action with us this week. Defend the land, defend our future.

Climate justice demands debt cancellation! Take action to tell the IMF that the debt of Global South nations is connected to a warming climate...and how much debt cancellation matters!

Those of us in the US have a particular responsibility to pressure our government, since the US Treasury Secretary has veto power within the IMF governing body. And we can encourage the Global South delegates who are pushing for debt cancellation.

We will gather at 1700 K St NW at 7:30am and then depart by 8am to march.

Let's Speak for the Trees - March to Save Rock Creek

  • Picnic Grove #6, Rock Creek Park Washington DC USA (map)

The Rock Creek Park we all love is in danger under the hands of the National Park Service, as they move forward with their plan to cut down 1000+ trees to expand a golf course. But we know that the people of DC will not let that happen.

Join us as we Speak for the trees, loud enough so NPS is forced to listen. We will gather and celebrate all the gifts Rock Creek Park gives to us. We will celebrate their beautiful canopy, their life-giving presence, their strength and their long and loving endurance. We will fight this deforestation plan with love as a way to show not only our gratitude, but our reciprocity.

The "Let's Speak for the Trees" march will be on Sunday, October 13th starting at 2pm. This will be a peaceful, joyous and loving demonstration. More details to come.

Save Rock Creek NVDA Training
Sep

Save Rock Creek NVDA Training

The National Park Service’s current Rock Creek Golf Course “rehabilitation” plan is a $35 million abomination.

  • NPS’ current plan cuts down more than 1,200 trees. This is the equivalent of 8 acres of forest or a whole city block full of trees.

    • 119 of these trees are over 100 inches in circumference and 31 inches in diameter, deeming them Heritage Trees and thus have special protections under law.

  • The plan includes new, bright, artificial lighting for an expanded clubhouse and 50-bay driving range. This new artificial lighting disrupts wildlife, damages human health, wastes money and energy, and contributes to climate change.

  • NPS’ plan fattens the pocketbooks of wealthy golf course managers at the expense of our health, our climate, and the well-being of our ecosystem.

The National Park Service’s plan contributes to climate chaos.

  • Trees sequester carbon. They take carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere, helping reduce the overall concentration of greenhouse gasses that are warming our planet.

    • The National Park Service plans to cut 1,200 trees, over 100 of which are very large Heritage Trees. This will release a significant amount of carbon into the atmosphere, directly contributing to climate chaos.

  • NPS’ mitigation plan, to plant new trees in place of the ones they cut down, will take decades to replace the climate mitigation abilities of the trees they are cutting down now.

    • Mature trees are more resilient than young trees and thus more likely to survive extreme weather events and a changing climate. As we experience more severe weather such as heat waves and storms, it is crucial to keep mature trees in their place so they can help us weather the storms.

Sign up to to get updates on our upcoming NVDA training. Learn the skills needed to STOP this climate crime!

*Why NVDA?*

Traditional methods of demanding change such as voting and lobbying have not worked. This is why we turn to Non-Violent Direct Action: We must use our collective power to stop business as usual and create a better future for all!

  • Rock Creek Park Golf Course (map)

Come support the resident creatures of Rock Creek Park! The National Park Service "rehabilitation plan" for the Rock Creek Park Golf Course is threatening the homes of many longtime park denizens. This plan would rip out over 1200 trees in the park, destroying habitat and driving up the summer heat, and would light up the sky with blinding artificial lights at night.

The local birds, bats, trees, and tiny amphipods will finally be given a chance to speak their minds on the NPS plan. All humans are invited to support them! Will we finally listen to the wisdom of the animals?

Mi’kmaq grandmothers will visit DC on June 20 all the way from Nova Scotia! Come hear their stories of protecting sacred indigenous land from the false claims and reckless pipeline plans of Washington Gas’s parent company AltaGas in Canada. Free event.

AltaGas – the controversial parent company of Washington Gas – is increasingly referred to as “one of the worst fossil fuel companies in North America.”

But don’t take our word for it. Join XRDC, CCAN, and others, on June 20 at Foundry United Methodist Church in D.C. for an in-person evening with indigenous Mi’kmaq grandmothers from Nova Scotia.

For nearly ten years, these heroic leaders fought – and won – a bruising pipeline fight against another subsidiary of AltaGas called Alton Gas. Along the way, they encountered the kind of false claims, greed, and fossil fuel expansion efforts that Washington Gas now shows almost daily across DC, Maryland and Northern Virginia.

Dance Parade for a Methane Free Future

Dance Parade for a Methane Free Future

That's right - this is a dance parade! For a future free of toxic, planet-heating methane gas! It's beginner-friendly and family-friendly! And you're invited! Read on and sign up for a guaranteed fun time.

Mayor Bowser's climate goals sound good on paper, but her actions to make those goals a reality are sorely lacking. Most recently, the Mayor has still failed to meet XRDC's demands that we hand-delivered to her in April. Mayor Bowser needs to acknowledge that Washington Gas's Project Pipes program makes her climate goals impossible to meet, and she needs to protect DC residents from the toxic gas that Washington Gas pipes into our homes.

Mayor Bowser’s failure to meet our demands allows Washington Gas to continue to poison our communities and our future. Since the Mayor has failed to meet these demands and act with residents' health and wellbeing in mind, it's up to us to raise a ruckus about the dangers of methane gas.

We will be taking to the streets to dance for a methane-free DC because we believe in the power of community to direct us to the fossil-free, livable future we deserve.

We will be simultaneously alerting our community to the dangers of methane gas while also embodying the future want to live in.

Together, we can dance our way to a safe, thriving, methane-free future and push our leaders to do the same.

Rain date: Sunday, June 2nd - same time, same place. Please sign up using this form so that we can contact you to let you know if we are rescheduling to the rain date:

Outgrow the System • Documentary Screening

There is widespread concern that the current economic system is putting humanity on the brink of ecological breakdown. Calls to act on climate change therefore increasingly demand the transition to a more sustainable and just economic system. But what does such an alternative economic system look like - and how do we make it happen?

Join us for a film screening of the documentary “Outgrow the System” and discussion to explore fresh thinking on alternative economic models. The one-hour documentary, crafted by a Swedish collective of filmmakers, sheds light on economic strategies that steward our planet's limited resources, aiming to safeguard the survival of humans and other species.

The event is co-organized by the Heinrich Böll Foundation, Washington, DC and Extinction Rebellion Washington, D.C. (www.xrdc.org). Founded in the UK in 2018, Extinction Rebellion is a global non-partisan movement using non-violent direct action and civil disobedience to persuade governments to act justly on the climate and ecological emergency. The Heinrich Böll Foundation is a non-profit organization that is part of the global green movement.
