September 22, 2021, Washington DC -- Rebels from Extinction Rebellion DC (XRDC) sank a row house in the Tidal Basin on Wednesday morning, September 22. The house serves as a warning to us all: unless we act now, sea level rise will be catastrophic. Instead of debating debt ceilings, the U.S Government needs to Act Now. In the face of mass extinction: who cares how much it costs to survive?
“The American Dream is underwater,” said XRDC spokesperson Reilly Polka. “The iconic cherry trees that line the banks of the Tidal Basin will soon be underwater — and so will we. If we have any hope of saving our planet, of saving humanity, we need to Act Now. This is the last chance our politicians have to pass meaningful climate legislation. Fail and they will condemn billions of people to immense suffering. The collapse of society as we know will be inevitable. When it comes to climate action, there’s no question: it’s do or die.”
We are off track to keep global warming at or below 2 degrees Celsius. And even if we reach that goal, melting of the Antarctic ice sheet will cause sea levels to rise two and a half meters around the world. In addition to coastal flooding, the climate crisis will continue to bring extreme weather, fires, and severe crop failures, harming marginalized people the most. There is no more time left. Our choice is clear.
WHO: Extinction Rebellion (XR) is an international movement that uses non-violent civil disobedience to halt mass extinction and minimize the risk of social collapse. Along with branches and chapters in 70 countries and 350+ cities, XR Washington DC is in open rebellion against the world's governments for their criminal inaction on the climate and ecological crisis.
