April 13th, 2021, Washington, D.C. – “This bank funds mass extinction.” Rebels from Extinction Rebellion DC (XRDC) are sticking to the truth, by literally sticking the truth onto banks and ATMs across the District. The stickers inform that Chase Bank, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and Citibank provide billions of dollars to finance construction of the destructive Line 3 oil pipeline in Minnesota.

The climate and ecological emergency is already destroying human well-being. The Line 3 pipeline will make the crisis even worse, locking in as many planet-burning carbon emissions as 50 coal-fired power plants for decades. Enbridge, the oil company building the pipeline, has a history of neglecting pipeline maintenance and is responsible for one of the largest in-land oil spills in the United States.

Chase Bank, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and Citibank are among the biggest funders of fossil fuel projects in the world, making them some of the planet’s worst climate criminals. Enbridge, with the banks’ financing, is plowing its Line 3 pipeline through the wilds of Minnesota, threatening wetlands and the nation’s  water supply. The oil pipeline also crosses Indigenous lands, violating the Anishinaabe people’s treaty rights.

On April 1, rebels showed solidarity by joining an Indigenous youth-led rally in Washington, D.C. to pressure Biden to shut down the pipeline. On March 27, XRDC rebels spilled “oil” outside Chase Bank in Columbia Heights to illustrate the threat toxic oil spills from Line 3 pose to the water security of millions of Americans.

Let’s get “un-stuck” on fossil fuels. To do that, we need to hold banks accountable for their role in financing the climate crisis. XRDC demands that banks stop financing the Enbridge Line 3 project.

WHO: Extinction Rebellion (XR) is an international movement that uses non-violent civil disobedience to halt mass extinction and minimize the risk of social collapse. Along with branches and chapters in 70 countries and 350+ cities, XR Washington DC is in open rebellion against the world's governments for their criminal inaction on the climate and ecological crisis.
